The subconscious is experienced as the dream persona. Dreams that enter
the
conscious memory, and lucid dreams, are due to increased engagement of the
conscious in a process designed for the subconscious. It is much less
intelligent, living in a continuous present with virtually no memory or
perception of time. This is not the conscious dumbed-down by sleep,
because
it has experiences of which the conscious, though awake, remains unaware.
This happens in a process for the discharge of tension.
The moment that the attention centres on a new item, or twist, of worry,
there is a jolt of bad feeling that is greatly dispro****tionate to the
subject matter. This is produced by the momentary (electronically
detectable?) display of a frightening dream-image to the subconscious.
The subconscious also functions as autopilot for parts of routine tasks.
