Re: Gold Panning in Montgomery Co., MD. in the news

I have found quite a bit of gold in Rock Run over the years. However,
the best spot in the DC area is upstream from the bridge at Scots Run
Park where the stream makes a sharp bend. Many times have found half
a dozen pieces that could pick up with fingers. You really need a
small dredge to do this with any profit. Also, confine activity to
hours after ten AM and before three PM. Not on weekends. I recently
sold my four inch dredge to a Fairfax County prospector and he has
found numerous large nuggets in the county. Again, panning is only
for location. You need a dredge or high banker to make any money.
Also, read up on flood plain easements and road right of way so you
know your legal position. Stay out of parks of any kind. The
operators will go ballistic. Go to county land office, ask for the
tax map and find out who owns the property and what areas are in the
public domain.... first. Take a copy of the maps with you in case you
are challenged.
