I would recommend you contact the Geological Survey for the state you
are going to visit and ask for their pub covering gem collecting.
Most of the better sites have now become so commercialized that it is
somewhat discouraging to visit them. I visited Hiddenite some years
ago and not only could not find any minerals, I could not even find a
loose rock. Everything loose had been picked up.
Try to locate a copy of George Sinkankas book: Gemstones of North
America. He gives numerous localities, photos etc.
