DISPATCHERS RECEIVE AWARD FOR ACTION DURING APRIL FIRE AT 9-1-1 CENTER
By Dedrick Allan 29/07/2008
The Shelton City Commission presented an Olympic Achievement Award to
three
dispatchers at the 9-1-1 Communications Center that serves Mason County.
On
April 28th, dispatchers Matt Heinrich, Cathy Field and Val VanCleve
re****ted
smoke in the Communications Center which forced the evacuation of the
Shelton
Civic Center. However, the three remained at their posts dispatching
emergency
calls while firefighters investigated the source of the smoke and then
ventilated the area. The smoke was caused by shorted out wires on the
battery
backup for a fire alarm receiver. The award is for “their calm,
professional
conduct, and decisive actions” that ensured there was limited damage to
the
facility and for the three providing continuous emergency communications
to all
residents during this incident. If the dispatch center, now known as
MasCom, had
been evacuated, calls to 9-1-1 would have been routed to CapCom in Olympia
