A satellite with advanced sensors and mapping instruments that's able
to predict climate change will soon be orbiting Earth.
Know as the gravity field and steady state ocean circulation explorer,
the satellite will accurately monitor Earth's gravitational field to
ascertain any acceleration of global warming.
The sensors will also provide the most accurate image of the ocean
temperatures and any changes in movements by comparing the surface
shape undulations in the gravitational field.
The ocean conveyor transfers vast amounts of heat around the planet,
which effects Earth's overall temperature and climate.
The satellite known as a GOCE will be in operation for 18 months and,
during that time, will complete 10 new maps of the gravitational
field.
GOCE is the first in a series of Earth exploring satellites that will
orbit from pole to pole at a low altitude of about 160 miles close
enough to Earth surface to measure minute fluctuations in gravity and
temperature fluctuations without being buffeted by cosmic rays.
