I keep hearing the idea sup****ted in the press that we shouldnt use
antibiotic soaps because it will start to make germs immune. Thinking
about
how the "survival of the fittest" theory works, I dont see it applying
though. AFAIK there are two possible reasons for a species to grow
stronger
due to culling the weak. In breeders species killing the weak allows the
stronger ones to breed strong+strong thus making more strong children.
But
germs obviously dont breed. For germs the only mechanism I could see is
if
you suppose that killing the weak ones leaves more food for the strong
ones
thus allowing them to multiply faster. But I seriously doubt that germs
have any food shortage. So I think that antibacterial soap while causing
there to be a higher percentage of strong germs, would not make more of
them. They would multiply at exactly the same rate as before. There
would
not be more of them.
Sorry if this wasnt clear. I hope that the idea was got across, and I
hope
you dont think this is some kind of troll. Just been thinking about it
and
would like to get others thoughts on it.
