Pygmy sperm whale found dead off SC beach

ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. --
A dead whale has washed ashore on a South Carolina beach, the ninth
whale found off the Southeast coast in the last two weeks.
Authorities tell The Post and Courier of Charleston that an Isle of
Palms employee saw the nearly 12-foot pygmy sperm whale rolling in the
surf Sunday morning.
Officials say nine dead whales have been found off the Atlantic coast
from Florida to North Carolina in the past two weeks, an unusually
high number.
Scientists are awaiting test results to determine if there is
something wrong.
Pygmy sperm whales typically swim in the deep water of the Gulf
Stream.
